There are a number of unsolved problem in the mechanism of crystallization from solution. This is also true of the effect of additives on the properties of solution and their incorporation into the growing crystal. Additives in a solution can influence the growth of crystal in various ways as well as its properties. The effects of additives in the habit of the crystal, the growth rate, the nucleation and the incorporation are currently under investigation, in particular the effect of trivalent metal ions(Fe, Al, Cr) The crystal growth rate and the crystal habit of potassium dihydrogen phosphate(KDP) changed when crystallized from aqueous solution in the presence of a low concentration of aluminum ion. The question arises as to what extent the presence of trivalent metal ion is affecting the crystal growth rate, the nucleation and the incorporation.
