What Are General Education Courses?
General education courses are designed for all undergraduate students. They help students develop broad perspectives, cultivate well-rounded character, strengthen inquiry-based learning, and build international communication skills.
Course Location and Format
General education courses are offered mainly in the first year at the Himeji Engineering Campus through in-person classes. Remote learning systems are also used to provide effective and flexible learning opportunities.
Features of General Education at the University of Hyogo
- Students can take university-wide courses by using remote learning systems in cooperation with the Kobe University of Commerce Campus.
- English communication courses are offered in small classes to develop practical language skills.
- Students can take interdisciplinary seminars that go beyond the boundaries of individual faculties.
- Students systematically acquire basic knowledge of information science and information processing skills.
Course Categories
1. Liberal Arts and Human Development Courses
These courses cultivate broad knowledge, well-rounded character, and the ability to explore social issues from multiple perspectives.
- Humanities: Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics, Introduction to Literature, and related subjects
- Social Sciences: Introduction to Law, Introduction to Political Science, Constitutional Law of Japan, and related subjects
- Natural Sciences: Introduction to Life Science, Introduction to Materials Science, Introduction to Earth Science, and related subjects
2. Interdisciplinary Education Courses
These courses help students develop active learning habits, foundational skills for university study, and the ability to continue learning throughout their careers.
In addition to foundational seminars, students can take interdisciplinary seminars that integrate the humanities and sciences, cross faculty boundaries, and address real-world problems. Courses that reflect the strengths and distinctive features of the University of Hyogo are also offered.
- University of Hyogo distinctive subjects: Synchrotron Radiation Science, Medical Engineering, Introduction to Disaster Prevention Studies, and related subjects
3. Foreign Language Courses
These courses aim to improve the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Placement-based classes allow students to study at a level suited to their abilities.
E-learning and AI-based tools are also used to develop practical communication skills for an increasingly global society.
